Funrazors, DJ Treblelizer biography

  • Rocking your world with his own style!

DJ Treblelizer (Koen) was born in southern Vietnam and came to the Netherlands when he was only three months old. His Dutch life began in Apeldoorn, but eventually he grew up in Amsterdam and Purmerend. And it shows; this DJ speaks with a genuine Amsterdam accent, although he also effortlessly switches to fluent Vietnamese. At home he didn't grow up with music, but Koen came in contact with music quite early though. When he was about 10 years old, the music channel TMF started in The Netherlands. He saw video clips and music shows and decided instantly that he wanted to do something in the music industry. In that time DJs also became very popular, they were often to be seen on TV, which inspired him enormously. At a flea market on the Dutch Queensday he bought his first record player (without pitch control) and single from his pocket money. Two years later, he also bought his first mixer and so it began… With his record player and a small stereo set with double cassette deck, he made his first mix. He played records, mixed them with music from a cassette tape and recorded that on the second cassette deck. His first DJ set was at a high school party, with a tape deck, a CD player and a simple mixer.

Through the years he bought better equipment and started practicing mixing. He got his first official gig in 2002 in a Dutch club, which no longer exists. Shortly after this gig, he was asked to do a set in the Escape in Amsterdam. At that time, two-step was very popular but he didn't liked it at all so he played harder styles. When he put his first record on, everyone was a bit confused but within a few seconds the party went absolutely wild! Meanwhile, he attended many different dance parties and observed the DJs who were playing. He liked what they did but he decided that he wanted to develop his own style. And so he did. He often mixes in the break while most DJs mix after the break or at the end of a track. His style became a hit at parties and even other DJs asked him how he did that!

In 2006 he met his Funrazors buddy Damien at a party which he had organized together with a friend, who is an MC. Nothing happened yet there, but at the next party Damien grabbed the microphone and started MCing. Treblelizer saw the potential of this guy and brought him two turntables, a mixer and some records and taught him the basics of spinning and mixing. Once a week he went back to check Damien's progress and to give him tips and hints. In only a few months Damien learned to master the turntables, and eventually Koen asked him to join him at a party to play some records along with him and to be the MC of that night. And so it happened; they became friends and partners in crime. Together they played at lot of parties, but both still with their own artist names. One year later they officially started to work as the Funrazors. They came up with that name because a friend asked them to play at his wedding and they found they needed a fun name for their duo act. From that time they always performed as the Funrazors at parties throughout the whole country, Damien as DJ and MC as well. They've tried several dance styles and both decided that they like Dirty Dutch and Electro House most, and this is what they still do.

In 2008, Treblelizer was asked to do a tour in Southeast Asia, starting in Vietnam. Because he is from there and regularly goes back, he has gained many contacts in the dance scene there. He played in almost all major clubs in Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand for two months.

Though he already played a lot in The Netherlands and Asia, Treblelizer still has a lot of dreams in the dance industry. He wants to do tours in America, Japan, Australia, etc., preferably performing for huge audiences, like 20,000 plus. Also all major festivals in The Netherlands, like Mysteryland, Lowlands, Dance Valley, Defcon and more, are on his wish list. And then playing on the main stages on the best times. The same applies for major festivals in other countries, like Glastonbury in the UK and Pukkelpop in Belgium. And not to mention playing in Ibiza in all major clubs, and he wants to conquer London! Furthermore, a guest set on BBC Radio 1 is on his wish list.

At the moment, Treblelizer is working hard - together with Damien - on producing their own tracks and later an album. They already have some cool tracks in pre-production, which will be released very soon!

In his leisure time, Koen likes to play Mario Kart on the Nintendo Wii. He also likes nature photography, especially macro photography of flowers and bugs and stuff. He also works with a long-focus lens. He has visited several zoos to take close-up pics of animals, and would really love it to do the same during a Big Five safari in Africa.
